VSI's First Latin Majors
After launching the Latin Major this past year in partnership with Belmont Abbey College, VSI was thrilled to welcome its first declared majors this fall! The following is an interview with a member of this first group of students who have chosen to intensely focus on Latin in their undergraduate studies.
Interview: Caden Martinez
Where are you from, and how long have you been studying Latin?
I come from Temple, Tennessee, and have been studying Latin for only one year now!
What made you decide to major in Latin for your undergraduate degree?
I initially had not planned on continuing with it after my first two semesters of required language credits were finished. However, towards the end of the second semester, Magistra Annula [Dr. Nancy Llewellyn] gave an inspiring speech about the value of contuing with Latin. I appreciate that studying Latin lets me connect more deeply with the greatest achievement of mankind, Western civilization. You can only really know the story of the West if you can speak her language. It’s an inheritance we have both as westerners and as Catholics.
What part of the Latin major are you most excited about?
I’m most excited to be able to speak Latin and communicate with it. Also, something that has been very fruitful for my spiritual life is reading from the Vulgate. It helps me feel connected to the history of the Church, and I’m excited to read more Church texts in Latin.
What do you hope to do with your Latin degree?
I really do love Latin, and I’d be open to continuing my education with it and hopefully teaching it in some way. I also really want to teach my kids to speak Latin.
What Latin work do you really want to read in the future?
I’m excited to read De Bello Gallico, because I really love learning about Roman history!
