VSI Summer Workshops Preparing to Host Record Number of Students

Full immersion is one of the most powerful tools for learning any language, and this summer, Veterum Sapientia Institute will once again hold its three Latin immersion workshops.

From July 1-7, we will return to St Bernard’s Abbey in Cullman, Alabama, which welcomed us to its excellent facilities and beautiful campus for the first time last year. Here we will hold two workshops simultaneously, called Ab Initio and Vinculum. “Ab initio” means “from the beginning”, and is for those who either have never studied Latin at all, or who may know something of the language, but have had little or no opportunity to speak it. Vinculum is for more advanced students, those who have studied Latin for at least a year or two, and of course, those who know the language well, but want to gain practice speaking it, are also very welcome.

From July 21-27, the eleventh edition of our flagship workshop Veterum Sapientia, for Catholic clergy and religious, will be held at St Joseph’s College Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina. Like our school, the workshop is named after Pope St John XXIII’s Apostolic Constitution which emphasized the tremendous importance of Latin for the education of the clergy. We are especially proud to make this annual contribution to fulfilling his vision for preserving and transmitting the wisdom of the ancients to the rising generations of men and women working in the vineyard of the Lord.

The theme for this year’s Vinculum workshop is Angels; texts about them will be selected from the Bible, the sacred liturgy, the Church Fathers, and theological and historical writers of both the medieval and modern period.

The theme for this year’s Veterum Sapientia workshop is the Communion and Cultus of the Saints; related texts will be selected from the Bible, the sacred liturgy, the Church Fathers, and theological and historical writers of both the medieval and modern period.
